5/16/09-What Would a City Without Sexual
Violence Look Like?
Such a poignant question! The New York City
Alliance Against Sexual Assault is a
non-profit organization whose mission is to
perform research and develop policies that
will help prevent sexual violence. They
recently conducted a three-year study among
NYC high school students which found that
sexual and dating violence are shockingly
prevalent among this group. To answer the
questions why it occurs and what can be done
to end it, the Alliance’s Youth Action
Council asked 35 of the students studied to
convey their ideas about what a city without
sexual violence would look like—and how to
achieve this goal—through photos and
narratives. This June, the very moving
results of Project Envision will be
displayed publicly to audiences that’ll
include NYC politicians and policymakers.
Today, Crime Prevention Specialist Susan
Bartelstone speaks with Harriet Lessel,
Executive Director of the Alliance, about
exactly what that model city would look
like.
